Business Directory of Accounting, Tax and Finance-Related Organizations

For those who are looking for accounting and tax professionals, hopefully the links below will be helpful to you.

The Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) Association has an interesting publication, Eight questions to ask your accountant before starting a business which may be of assistance to you.

Categories of Canadian Tax Professionals

Not all CPAs practice tax full time.  Most have studied income tax and have a basic knowledge of it and have no problem preparing tax returns, but some specialize in income tax or commodity tax and practice one of these full time.

Not all lawyers practice tax full time, but some specialize in it.

An article by David Rotfleisch, CPA, CA, JD, explains the categories of tax professionals in Canada, and provides some insight into which professional you need depending on your circumstances.

The Canadian Bar Association has a Find-a-Lawyer page where one can search for a Lawyer specializing in Taxation, but tax lawyers must have to opt in to be listed, because a quick search of tax lawyers in Vancouver, BC, omitted some well-known tax law firms.

Chartered Professional Accountants (CPAs)

Now that the CPA unification process includes all CAs, CGAs and CMAs in Canada, many provincial and regional bodies of CPA Canada provide a CPA Firm Directory where interested parties can search for a CPA firm based on location, firm size, industries services, and services provided.  If your firm is not yet listed in the CPA Firm Directory, we would recommend that you get your firm added to it.  If you are looking for the services of a professional accountant, this is a good place to start.

Accounting Association Links

Chartered Professional Accountants (CPAs)  - on October 1, 2014 there was an amalgamation of the associations of the Chartered Accountants (CAs), Certified General Accountants (CGAs) and Certified Management Accountants (CMAs) in Canada.  All are now CPAs.  For 10 years after amalgamation, members are required to use the CPA designation followed by their former designation. New graduates simply use the CPA designation.

Links to Provincial and Regional CPA Bodies, for access to their CPA Firm Directory, if they have one.  If not, they will likely have a search utility so that you can confirm that a particular CPA is a member in good standing.
