The present value is the amount that would have to be invested today at the given rate of return, in order to have the desired amount in the future. 
You can use this calculator to determine any of the factors used in the equation.

Each column is calculated independently of the others - enter amounts in any column - results are recalculated automatically.
Each year is assumed to be 365 days long.
Most Canadian mortgages are compounded semi-annually.
When amounts are owed to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or Internal Revenue Service (IRS), interest is compounded daily. An exception is late or underpaid estimated US taxes for individuals or corporations payable to the IRS.
Find future value - How much will you have in the future based on what you invest now?
Enter:     - the amount to be invested at the start of the time period (present value)
  - the annual interest rate (nominal rate)
  - the type of compounding - daily, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, monthly, semi-annual, or annual
  - the time period (and choose yrs or mos)
The calculator will show you the amount you will have at the end of the time period (future value).
Find present value - What is needed to invest now to get the desired amount in the future?
Enter:     - the amount you would like to have in the future (future value)
  - the annual interest rate (nominal rate)

The calculator will show you the interest rate required to achieve the future value.

  - the amount you would like to have in the future (future value)
  - the annual interest rate (nominal rate)
  - the type of compounding - daily, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, monthly, semi-annual, or annual
The calculator will show you the time period required to achieve the future value.
